Sporting Days Out in Sydney

Sydney has a rich sporting history, having been the home of some great cricket, soccer, rugby and athletics events. Here a guide on where you need to go in order to take in the sporting delights available.

Rugby

Both Rugby league and Rugby Union have homes in Sydney, with 9 of the 16 teams in the National Rugby League being situated in Sydney.

Any rugby fan should visit the Telstra ‘Stadium Australia’, which has held most of Australia’s biggest rugby matches, including of course the 2003 Rugby world cup final between England and Australia.

Cricket

Regular tours are taken at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which walks you through the history of Cricket in Australia and some of the historic matches that have taken place there. Relive the first Ashes match which took place thee in 1883, to the most recent Australian victories against England and the rest of the world.

Soccer / Football

Soccer has been getting increasingly more popular in Australia, which has led to back-to-back qualifications for the world cup. A lot of European footballers are migrating to Australia and specifically Sydney FC who play at the ANZ stadium. With a loyal fan base and a great atmosphere, taking in a game at the ANZ is always a treat for any sports fan.

Australian Rules Football

As the name suggests, Aussie rules is a sport unique to Australia, taking in influences from Soccer and Rugby, this hybrid sport is one of the premier attractions for any sport lover.

Sydney’s ‘Sydney Swans’, who were recently champions in the AFL (Australian Football League), are the main attraction, but as of 2012, Sydney will have two teams in the top league as the GWS Giants join the league and offer the biggest and most competitive Aussie rules rivalry to date.

Add to that a trip to Stadium Australia, which was home of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and you have the perfect holiday for any sport enthusiast.
