Things to do in the Adelaide Hills of Australia

As Australia’s 5th largest city, Adelaide was founded in 1836 by Colonel Light.  His design for the city was to reflect the beautiful open parklands, ensuring the views and landscapes were not tarnished by the building of a new city.  This idea was reflected in the future development of the city, which is very much focused on sustainability, environmental consciousness and conservation of wildlife.

Situated around 30 minutes from the city centre, and around 45 minutes from Adelaide airport, the Adelaide hills provide a surprisingly peaceful and serene destination, considering its close proximity to such a bustling city. Recent realignment of the roads and construction of the Heysen Tunnels have also played a part in the Adelaide Hills becoming a more frequented spot, well deserved too given all that’s on offer.

Wine Tours

Adelaide is Australia’s wine capital, and the Adelaide hills have a vast number of slopes and valleys with all kinds of wines for the discerning or novice pallet. The varying slopes, valleys and sub-valleys adds to each wine its own unique and distinct aspects meaning there is a seemingly never ending variety of wines and types to choose from.  Some of the more famous valleys and regions include the Borossa Valley and Coonawarra Valley – both red wine valleys – and the Clare Valley – offering a type of white wine in the Reisling variety of white grapes.

Walking Trails

Nature lovers of all levels can make the most of the Adelaide Hills.  Along these serene trails you can find not only fellow walkers, but also horse riders and cyclists depending on which trail you take and how energetic you’re feeling. With 250km worth of trail, the Mawson and Kidman trails are among the most popular. While shared by walkers, cyclers or riders, there is never a stressful or busy feel given the vastness and expanse of the trails, which show the beauty of the natural bushland, mountains, dirt roads, farms and of course, the vineyards. If you’re in the mood for cycling, Adelaide offers free rental of bicycles as part of their green scheme in the city.

Driving Trips

If you want the wind in your hair, then driving through the Adelaide Hills may be for you. Famous for its roads and surrounding scenery, a driving tour of the Hills offers a great deal, with lots of great stops along the way.  Along the famous driving roads along Adelaide Hills are a numer of old towns and villages worth stopping in at.  Much of the architecture and cuisine has a Germanic feel given the European heritage of settlers that first inhabited the areas. There are a number of types of drives offering different scenic attractions and activities, from antiquing, trips to wetlands, botanic gardens or parklands and villages.

Dining

This scenic part of Southern Australia offers not only a vast number of visual delights but also culinary delights. Much of the area is known for its gourmet pizza offerings, but you can also expect high quality, local and fresh produce from the area. With a quaint country ambience, you can enjoy  fine dining at Mount Lofty House, where you can enjoy a dinner by open fire.

There are also a number of gourmet pubs offering great quality hearty food such as Grumpy’s Brewhouse, Mallee’s Grill restaurant or even the Scenic Hotel. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wishing to stay there, or any other of the local accommodation spots.

Holiday goers booking with a travel rewards card can benefit from using collected rewards points as cash towards the cost of their trip.   Many credit cards also have partnerships with many tour operators, restaurants and shops, so be sure to make the most of them to save some money on your holiday.

If Australia does not want to miss views of anything, then I recommend that one of the first places you visit is the wonderful city of Melbourne, which is considered the city “more educated” in Australia. You may get this name from the huge numbers of immigrants who live there, doing that is not only a place of “worship”, but multicultural in the widest sense of the word.

Among the most widely spoken languages are: English, Chinglish, Grecinglish, Espanglish, Italinglish and Portuguenglish.Y this is not everything. Walking through the streets of Melbourne may notice that even in the gastronomic mix of cultures is not expected. Walking, for example, by the beautiful streets of Clayton (Australian suburb) notice the amount of bars and shops of different backgrounds that form.

Perth, The Coast of Australia

Perth is the capital of Western Australia. Located on the coast is washed by the Indian Ocean. Its population of over one and a half million inhabitants, became one of the most populated cities in the country. It has a very active business district, situated on the banks of the river that runs through the city, the Swan. The port where exports are gold, nickel and aluminum, runs from the time of founding of the city by the British settlers in 1829.

Following the practice of cities on the coast of Australia due to its proximity to the sea and the possibility of fleeing before a possible attack of the aborigines, the city was considered as such since 1856 by the British crown.

A remarkable feature of the town is the village closest to the city of Adelaide. However, this is more than two thousand miles away, making Perth the city with over one million more isolated from the world. Geographically it is closer to Jakarta than Sydney. Although in its early population consisted of British settlers, there are now colonies of Croats, Germans, Dutch, Macedonian, Malay, Vietnamese, Indians and Italians.

Visitors will find many attractions in the city. In the port is always open-air markets, especially on weekends, with several cafes and places to eat. The area of the Swan River Valley is famous for its wine production, there are over 40 vineyards many of which are run by families of the original founding of the city. There is a ferry that takes in the port city and leading to Rottnest Island, an ideal destination for holidays, with excellent beaches and turquoise waters.
